Back from Ashland! I have to say the plays were amazing..excellent!
There were many memorable moments, such as when a group of 8th graders stalked Henry with their cameras and lied about having friends too chicken to ask for a photo.
Day by day:
Friday: Departed from high school early in nifty tour bus, picked up Lake Oswego kids (about 25 of them), headed to Ashland. Watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Sword In the Stone. Off to a good start money management-wise as I only spent $2 at McDonalds for lunch. Arrived around 3:30. The weather proved to be gorgeous, about 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The air seems so different, almost coastal minus the salty sea smell and humidity..really quite nice and such a change from Hood River's orchard and farm fragrance at this time of year. Ate at a restaurant below this really nice huge hotel, shared some laughs with the creepy waiter. Caesar salad with grilled chicken and parmesan..pretty darn good. Prologue for The Royal Family at 7, the play started at 8. Two hours 40 minutes and kept my attention the whole time...dramatic comedy, stunning set, incredible acting. It's amazing to think of this as being longer than a normal movie and run straight through with no chances for breaks or room for mistake.
Saturday: Busy day! Theatre tour at 10:30, prologue for The Comedy of Errors , then the play at 1:30. Wow...very visually stunning, rotating palm trees, mirrors from floor of stage to ceiling, outrageous costumes. Went back to the hotel to get dressed up for dinner and the next play. Ate at an Italian restaurant, excellent pizza of course. Then prologue for The Visit, so us HR kids were all dressed up and got some amazed looks from others. Called a dark comedy which proved to be debatable. Huge difference from the other two. It was just very bizarre. Excellent symbolic representations with color and set. After seeing two golden retrievers on stage for The Royal Family however, I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of a black panther (just a veiled cage and growling noises were used.) This one sparked a vast and everchanging discussion. After (around 11:30) we went to this beautiful little French restaurant for dessert. Raspberry Chocolate Roulande and Gateau de Mousse Chocolat: heavenly! We waltzed at midnight at The Bricks, despite the cold factor. Then it was back to the hotel. Laughing ensued over some rather random topics, and oh we had to set our clocks ahead, so ended up going to bed around 3!
Today: Got up too early, packed and left hotel, then to dreaded acting workshop..wasn't too bad though. Ate sandwiches in park..ordered turkey on wheat, ended up with roast beef on white..figure that one. Photographed ducks, went for "homemade" ice cream, and then time to leave. What a long bus ride. Saw four deer. Fun weekend!
